De Baca sheriff announced Monday

Staff Reports

The name of a new sheriff for De Baca County will be announced at Monday’s County Commission meeting, De Baca County Commissioner Joe Steele said Friday.

De Baca County citizens voted to recall former Sheriff Gary Graves on Nov. 10, after a citizens group petitioned to remove him from office.

Graves was accused of acts of malfeasance while in office, including misappropriating funds, mistreating prisoners and sexual harassment. Graves denied the allegations.

Three applicants from De Baca County are under consideration after being interviewed by commissioners, and two applicants were deemed ineligible for consideration because they are not De Baca County residents, Steele said.

The three applicants underwent police background checks and two have public service backgrounds, Steele said.

Commissioners allowed a month to pass for all applications to be submitted, Steele said.

The appointed sheriff will be in office until a sheriff is elected, Steele said; the next general election is in November and the primary is in June, he said.
