Police car hits, kills pedestrian

A woman walking home with dinner was killed by a Clovis police car as she crossed Mitchell Street at 6:45 p.m. on Monday night, officials and witnesses said.

Dolores Jacks, 71, was killed after a police car, driven by Clovis Police Lt. Roger Grah, struck her, according to a press release from the New Mexico State Police Department.

NMSP Capt. Oscar Gonzales said about 11:15 p.m. that officials had not determined if Grah was on duty when the accident occurred.

“We’re still taking statements and reviewing police records and logs,” Gonzales said.

Officials said Jacks died at Plains Regional Medical Center.

Joe Garcia, who lives near the site of the fatality at 12th and Mitchell streets, said he came out from his house when he saw police lights flashing. He said he saw the woman’s body in the road.

Garcia said he would give firewood to the woman, who was a neighbor.

Garcia said Jacks had been to a nearby convenience store and had picked up dinner for herself and her husband.

“I heard her husband yelling,” Garcia said.

Scene reconstruction investigators from Roswell were called in, Gonzales said.
