Dora boys move to 5-2

TEXICO — The Texico Lady Wolverines raced out to a 24-6 lead at the end of the first half on their way to a 51-13 victory over the Dora Lady Coyotes on Tuesday night.

Kelsey McKinney led the Lady Coyotes with nine points while Faith Martin paced Texico with nine points. Lori Richardson chipped in with eight points for the Lady Wolverines.

“We played good defense,” Dora coach Myra Skinner said. “We didn’t execute so well on offense. We were getting the shots, we were just not making them.”

The Dora Lady Coyotes were without post Rana Terry, but Skinner said it was just for one game. Skinner said being without Terry took away some height and scoring from the Lady Coyotes.

Dora dropped to 0-7 on the season and the Lady Coyotes’ next game will be at Roy against the Lady Longhorns on Dec. 15.

Dora 50, Texico 47

The Dora Coyotes rallied in the second half to take the lead and held on to a 50-47 victory over the Texico Wolverines in Texico on Tuesday night.

Dora coach Ty Thatcher said the Coyotes allowed Texico’s Aaron Vaughan to score too many points off of offensive boards. Thatcher said Vaughan scored four buckets off of offensive rebounds in the first half and finished with 23 points in the game.

“We did a good job in the third quarter,” Thatcher said. The Coyotes outscored the Wolverines 19-9 with all 10 of Clay Smith’s points coming in the third quarter. “We were 6-for-7 from the free-throw line. We got to the line really well.”

J.R. Gonzales added 10 points while Casey O’Connor added eight points. Thatcher said early in the game the Coyotes had trouble scoring because of poor shot selection and lack of patience. He said the Coyotes started hitting their shots and held on for the victory to improve to 5-2.

Thatcher said his team did a better job of holding him off of the offensive boards in the second half.

The Dora Coyotes will play Cliff at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday in Tularosa for their first game of the Tularosa tournament.
