Southwestern overwhelms Hounds

WEATHERFORD, Okla. — Based on records, it may have looked like the teams switched uniforms.

Southwestern Oklahoma jumped out to an early lead and the Bulldogs rolled to their first win in seven outings this season, a 61-43 rout of Eastern New Mexico University on Thursday night in a Lone Star Conference men’s crossover game.

Southwestern has had ENMU’s number of late, having won the last four meetings against the Greyhounds (3-2).

The Bulldogs opened a 32-18 halftime lead and were never seriously challenged by the Hounds, whose only previous loss was a 90-85 verdict to perennial Division II power Washburn on a neutral court.

In this game, the Hounds were never able to get anything going. They shot only 36 percent for the game, including 32 percent in the first half (7-of-22) which ended with the Bulldogs in front 32-18.

Southwestern shot 56 percent for the game on 24-of-43, including 6-of-13 from 3-point range.

Junior guard Reggie Gunn led the Bulldogs with 15 points while senior forward Jon Gunn — Reggie’s cousin and senior guard Lonnie Cooks added 12 points apiece.

Freshman guard Joshua Jackson was ENMU’s lone double-figure scorer, hitting 3-of-6 from 3-point range and finishing with 11 points while playing just 16 minutes.
