Mayo, Cecil

Cecil Mayo, 88, of Fort Sumner, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, at Laurel Ridge Nursing Home in Clovis following a short illness.

He was born July 6, 1917, in Wise County, Texas to Herbert and Callie Mayo. The family homesteaded in Catron County in 1930. He attended school in Mountain View. He married June Griffith Sept. 1, 1942 in Phoenix, Ariz. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force and was stationed in Rome.

He and his wife owned and operated the Dariland Drive Inn for 22 years. After retiring, the couple opened the Re-Do Shop an upholstery and sewing business that they operated for 10 years. He was a member of Square Dance Club and was honored by the New Mexico Square Dance Hall of Fame in 1996. He was a charter member of The Church on The Hill in Fort Sumner.

Family members said he enjoyed spending time with family and square-dancing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Nolan Mayo and Roy Mayo; and nephew, Steve Mayo.

Survivors include his wife, June Mayo of Fort Sumner; daughter, Judy Bell (Jim) of Fort Sumner; son, Clifton Mayo of Dallas, Texas; three grandchildren, Tandela Sena (Ronald) of Fort Sumner, Chad Wahe of Fort Sumner and Cristal Wahe of Denver, Colo.; four great-grandchildren, Evan and Amber Sena, Cody Wahe and Shaiann Thunderheart, all of Fort Sumner; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Rev. Anna Teeter will officiate.

Burial will take place at Fort Sumner Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Bobby Russ, Bob Addison, Jim Lyssy, Sam Sena, Johnny Gallegos, David Bailey and David Crockett.

Honorary pallbearers will be Chad Wahe and Ronald Sena.
