Sept. 25 Honors

The Portales Rotary Club has chosen to highlight two Portales High School seniors as outstanding community youth for the month of September. The two are PHS Ram marching band drum majors Autumn Wilkerson and Jeremy Smith.

Wilkerson

Wilkerson holds the office of Student Body Secretary, after previously serving in the same role for the junior class last year. She is a member of National Honor Society, the PHS Chorale and Drama Club. She has received awards in algebra, world history and advanced English.

Wilkerson was the outstanding band marcher and the band sweetheart her freshman, sophomore and junior years.

She plans to attend Eastern New Mexico Univeristy next fall to major in business management and accounting, with a minor in music. She wants to continue working at her present job at Portales National Bank and hopes to become a bank president later in life.

Wilkerson attends Emmanuel Baptist Church and serves on its youth council. She is the daughter of Dwayne and Tammie Wilkerson.

Smith

Smith is a member of the National Honor Society and is ranked in the top 10 percent of his class. He is a four-year letterman in band and received the outstanding junior award last year. He was selected as a member of the all-state small school band.

Smith has been a drum major for two years and is the band representative to the PHS student council. He has received numerous awards in other academic subjects.

He plans to attend college with an interest in computers, but has not decided on a college yet.

An avid soccer player, Smith has competed for 13 years. He has served for four years as a youth representative to his church youth committee. He is the son of Steven and Kathy Smith.

Clayton

Traci Clayton, granddaughter of Joan and Emmitt Clayton of Portales, was crowned homecoming queen at the Sept. 16 Amarillo Sandies homecoming game.

Clayton is a senior at Amarillo High. She is a member of the band, the National Honor Society, the soccer team and the Spanish club.

She is the daughter of Lane and Kari Clayton of Amarillo.

Hunton

Debbie I. Hunton of Portales received a master of education degree as an education diagnotician major at West Texas A&M University.

Degrees were officially conferred on 277 students during commencement exercises Aug. 12 at the First United Bank Center in Canyon, Texas.
