Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Prep volleyball notes

Texico coach Mike Littlejohn said sophomore Bryn Mayfield is a clutch server.

“She’s saved our bacon lots of times with her serves,” Littlejohn said.

Her serving line from last weekend’s Mountain Top Tournament at Cloudcroft backs that up. She was 74 of 75 on serves with 28 aces.

“She had over a hundred serves in a row before she missed against Estancia (at Cloudcroft),” Littlejohn said, “and she’s not just getting them over, she has a ton of aces.”

The sophomore is not just a one-trick-pony for the 7-3 Lady Spikers.

“She’s all over the floor like a water bug,” Littlejohn said. “There aren’t too many balls that hit the floor that she doesn’t get a hand on.”

Clovis Christian has a lot of confidence into district play.

Last weekend, the Eagles went to Roswell and won the Gateway Christian Tournament without losing a game.

Coach Ceil Boatman said her team was hot all weekend and credits the success to a of couple lineup changes; Jennifer Schaap was moved to middle hitter and Amanda Montanez to libero.

“Jennifer is a little taller and has a quick approach,” Boatman said, “and Amanda is playing great, she loves playing back there.”

With Clovis Christian’s first district game tonight at Logan, the Eagles are hitting their stride at a perfect time.

“Our confidence level has really gone up,” Boatman said. “We had very few unforced errors. They took the next step up.”

Melrose is relying on a hitter-by-committee approach.

Coach Jason Lee said he has four hitters averaging more than five kills a game, and no one more than eight.

“If you have just one hitter,” Lee said, “and she is having an off night, your team is going to have an off night. We like to spread the ball around, we have a lot of options.”

Sophomores Ta’neil Roberts, Kimberly Lyons, and Toni Burdine, and junior Alisha Wagley are the four hitters sharing the wealth and leading Melrose to a 6-3 record.

“We’ve had one or two girls on at the same time, but not three or all four yet,” Lee said. “We have the potential to have a very good year, but we need to pass and handle the ball consistently.”
