Wildcats dominate 2nd half

ARTESIA — Fueled by what Clovis coach Shaun Gill thought was a bad call, Clovis scored three times in the second half and beat Artesia 3-0 Tuesday in a non-district game.

Angel Fernandez scored twice for the Wildcats and Luis Miranda added the other goal.

In a scoreless game, Clovis was called for a foul inside the penalty box and Artesia was awarded a penalty kick.

Gill questioned the call.

“It was a home-town call,” Gill said. “He said that number seven pushed their player down, but number seven was on the bench. He didn’t know what he saw.”

Despite Gill’s objections, the Bulldogs were given a penalty kick and the chance to draw first blood. The kick missed the mark and the Wildcats took over from that point on.

“That PK fired the guys up for sure,” Gill said. “That was easily the turning point.”

Gill said his team shut the Bulldogs down defensively in the second half.

“Our defense really played great,” Gill said. “They only had six shots and four of them were in the first half. We really controlled the pace of the game.”

Gill was extremely happy with his team’s effort.

“It could have been four or five nothing,” Gill said. “It’s going to go in the books as a 3-0, but we really controlled the game.”
