Leon Nash

Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.

Mr. Leon Palmer Nash, 94, of Clovis died Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, at the Retirement Ranch in Clovis.

He was born April 2, 1911, in Floyd to James Postell and Ida Bell (Dorsey) Nash. He attended school in Floyd, graduating in 1928. He attended Texas Tech in Lubbock for two years. He married Mildred Bell Key on Sept. 12, 1934, in Hagerman. He worked as cotton gin manager and for the city, county and state in Morton, Texas. The couple also lived in Roswell and Lamar, Colo. They settled in Floyd in 1942, where he farmed for many years and later operated a small dairy. He retired in 1986. He was director of the Coop Creamery Board, a charter member of Floyd Lions Club, and member of Roosevelt County Farm Bureau. He was active in the Floyd Methodist Church and on the boards of the Eastern New Mexico University Wesley Foundation, Floyd Senior Citizens and American Soil Conservation Service.

He was a member of a community quartet that sang for funerals, weddings and other social events in the Floyd and Portales area. Family said he enjoyed fishing, traveling, family and church dinners.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and a sister, Ora Pearl Morrison.

He is survived by two sons, Jerry Nash (and wife, Carol) of Clovis and Dave Nash (Sherry) of Floyd; a daughter, Elaine Nash of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Dawn Witten (Mark), Justin Nash (Tammy), Jerrilynn Blocker (Terry), Jenelle Nash, Lacee Ratcliff (Josh), Gavin Nash, Keyton and Honor Nash-Putnam; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Dorsey Nash of Clovis; and a sister-in-law, Maxine Payton of Hobbs.

The Rev. Mary Sue Hull will officiate the services.

Burial will be in Floyd Cemetery.

Pallbearers are his grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Floyd United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Al Kerby Sr.

Services: 2 p.m. (CDT) Monday at First Baptist Church of Bovina.

Al Kerby Sr., 81, of Bovina died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

He was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Amarillo. He married Jeanne Fredrick on Dec. 14, 1942, in Oakland, Calif. He moved to Bovina in 1947 from Amarillo. He was a blacksmith and a welder and served in World War II. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Bovina, serving as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher. He sang in the choir. Family members said he was instrumental in introducing pheasants to Parmer County and loved to sing, play the fiddle, and most of all, loved his family.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Jim Kerby.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Al kerby Jr. (and wife, Susan) of Bovina, a daughter, Paula Benton (Steve) of Muleshoe, a sister, Mary Beth Freudiger of Amarillo; three brothers, Ed Kerby of Portales, Bill Kerby of Aztec and Jack Kerby of Colorado Springs, Colo.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Herbert Bergstrom will officiate the services.

Burial will follow at Bovina Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 510 St. Jude Plac, Memphis, Tenn., 38105.

Cordy Luman King

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.

Mrs. Cordy Luman King, 92, of Ennis, Texas, died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005, in Ennis.

She was born Sept. 25, 1912, in Wood County, Texas, to Molly and Silas Pruden.

Mrs. King grew up in Wood County. She married Joe Luman Oct. 20, 1929. Soon after their marriage they moved near Lubbock, and in 1940 came to Roosevelt County, settling at Milnesand. She did her share of milking as well as any other chores. In the early 1960’s they moved to a place west of Portales. Joe Luman died in July of 1964. In 1971, she married Tom King. They made their home in Portales until his death in 1980. She moved to Ennis, Texas, to live with her daughter in 1998.

She was a member of the Church of God. In addition to the church, family members said she enjoyed the fellowship and activities of her homemaker’s club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Leonard, Elbert, Crowson and Orb Pruden, four sisters, Hester Pruden, Falby Cook, Ethel Cox and Gladys Wilkerson, and by both her husbands.

Survives include a son, Orbie E. Luman of Milnesand; a daughter, Alpha Joe Purcell (and husband, Harold) of Ennis, Texas; eight grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and a great-great-great-grandchild.

The Rev. Don Hay will officiate the services.

Burial will follow at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Ronald Flatt, Jr., Gary Harris, Jr., Matthew Harris, Brandon Luman, Dustin Davidson and Lance Davidson.

Honorary pallbearers are her other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and her great-great-great-grandchild.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
