"Keep Cannon" reception held

The City of Portales held a reception Tuesday to show appreciation for efforts in “Operation: Keep Cannon” at the Memorial Building.

The Portales committee worked with a Clovis committee on promoting the campaign to remove Cannon Air Force Base from the Base Realignment and Closure list. The Portales committee had not met since June 21, three days before the BRAC hearing held at Marshall Junior High in Clovis.

Portales City Manager Debi Lee said that Terry Moberly, chair of the Clovis Committee of Fifty, gave an update on working with BRAC staff and the state’s elected representatives before the BRAC commission sends its list to President Bush.

The list is due to the president Sept. 8. Moberly said the Committee of Fifty has a positive outlook and is hoping to find out Cannon’s fate between Sunday and Sept. 6.
