Farwell burying centennial time capsule

FARWELL — A container the size of an oil barrel will harbor a time capsule to commemorate the community’s 100th anniversary.

The time capsule will be buried in the city park July 30 during Border Town Days, an annual event hosted by Farwell and Texico.

A 100th edition of towns’ newspaper, a business card, a writing pen and a couple other items have been submitted, City Secretary Cynthia Thigpen said last week.

The capsule will be opened in 50 years, she said.

“I’ve been trying to think of something really unique to put in there,” she said. “The city will put in a (writing) pen they designed for the centennial celebration.”

The business card is from Municipal Judge P.C. Howard. Inscribed on the back he wrote, “I hope you’ve enjoyed your life as much as I did mine.”

“I said that because I doubt I’ll make it another 50 years,” chuckled the 67-year-old. “(The business card) just has my name as judge and when I served.”

City Councilor Tim Kasel presented the time capsule idea to the council after his hometown in Kansas commemorated its centennial in the same way.

“We’re asking residents to bring memorabilia of interest to place in the time capsule so that people 50 years from now can open it and see the history,” Kasel said. “Maybe someone will submit a cell phone. It’ll be neat to see how technology has advanced over the next 50 years.”

Kasel’s suggestions included popular music, books, movies and anything else that would paint a picture of what life was like in 2005.

To submit item for time capsule:

• The Farwell City Hall is taking submissions for the time capsule until July 1. Items must fit inside a cigar box.
