Elizabeth Carter, 92

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Mount Zion Cemetery near Dora.

Mrs. Elizabeth Carter, 92, of Portales, died Friday, April 29, 2005, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.

She was born on April 16, 1913, in Elida, to Zadie and Charles McClain.

She grew up on a ranch south of Taiban. She married Louis Carter in 1930. In 1964 they moved to Portales. She was a member of the Westside Baptist Church. Family members said she enjoyed cooking, especially baking.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Charlie McClain; a set of twins, Joe Merle and Zelma Pearl Carter; and her husband, Louis Carter, who died March 9, 1995.

Survivors include two sons, Eugene Carter (and wife, Linda) of Roswell and Charlie Carter of Las Vegas, Nev.; four daughters, Frances Northcutt of Hobbs, Louise Southern of Elida, and Violet Southern and Elaine Walker (Rob), all of Portales; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

The Rev. James Terry will officiate the services.

Honorary pallbearers are family members and friends.

Floyd Cooper, 66

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Parkland Baptist Church in Clovis.

Mr. Floyd Cooper, 66, died Friday, April 29, 2005.

He was born on March 20, 1939, in Marlow, Okla., to E.L. and Viola Haston Cooper.

He served in the U.S. Air Force. He married Geneva Stidham on July 12, 1960, in Portales. He served 26 years with the Clovis Fire Department, retiring as fire chief. He was a member of Parkland Baptist Church and the Kripple Creek coffee club.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother, Lloyd; and two brothers, John Cooper and Roy Bullard.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Duce Cooper (and wife, Glena) of Levelland, Texas, and Tray Cooper (Renee) of Tampa, Fla.; four granddaughters, Whitney Lynch (Shaun), Mallory and Chelsea Cooper, and Kayla Haack; two sisters, Mary Bishop of Duncan, Okla., and Shirley Davidson of Paris, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews

The Rev. Doug Brooks and Duce Cooper will officiate the services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Lubbock.

Arrangements are by Steed-Todd Funeral Home of Clovis.

Marie Fenton, 85

Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.

Mrs. Marie Fenton, 85, of Portales, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, in Friona.

She was born March 22, 1920, in Tulia, Texas, to Vera P. and William A. Stroup.

She grew up south of Manzano Mountains on a family farm. She married Ed Fenton on Oct. 28, 1938. They lived at Oasis State Park from 1964 until 1972, at Navajo Lake from 1972 until 1979, and later at Heron Lake. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Third and Kilgore Church of Christ. Family members said she enjoyed traveling and needlework.

She was preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers, Clementine, Bryant, Robbie Lee, Cleo, Everett, Philip and Charles Stroup; two sisters, Lottie May Drury and Ethel Armitage; and her husband, Ed.

Survivors include a daughter, Sondra Kinsey (and husband, Robert) of Hereford; three grandchildren, Bob, Michael and Lezlie Kinsey; and two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Weston Kinsey.

David Bennett will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Terry Cone, Deryl Love, Duane Lee, David Stone, and Brady and Adrian Stroup.

Lewis Gregory, 81

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.

Mr. Lewis Gregory, 81, of Portales, died Thursday, April 28, 2005, at his home.

He was born on Nov. 15, 1923, in Floyd, to Dessie and Walter Gregory.

The family moved to Roswell when he was 2 years old and to Floyd in 1935. He married Bertha Fowler on June 14, 1943, in Portales. He was a member of the Floyd Baptist Churc, Floyd and Portales Senior Citizens and VFW Post 3299. In 1989 they moved closer to Portales, and then in 1998 they moved to Golden Acres. Family members said he enjoyed playing dominos and fishing, but only when he couldn’t go hunting.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Paul Decker “Pudge” and Buck Allen Gregory; and a granddaughter, Karen Miller Elrod.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Barbara Miller (and husband, Bud) of Portales and Janice Lee (Eddie) of Floyd; four grandchildren, Howard Miller (and fiancé, Kelly Goss), Shannon Lee (Tammy) and Shane Lee (Karla), all of Portales, and Beverly Mast (Dion) of Las Cruces; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Lucille Gregory-Sadler of Portales and Clarissa Gregory-Wilson of Williamsburg.

The Rev. Walter Huber and Scott Reeves will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Floyd Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Kendel and Sam Buzard, Roy Tivis, Leon Nall, Dennis Luce, Andy Nials, Duane Lee and Brandon Fuqua.

Honorary pallbearers are his domino and coffee drinking buddies.

Corene Chambers, 75

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.

Mrs. Corene Chambers, 75, of Portales, died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at her home.

She was born on April 5, 1930, in Slaton, Texas, to Julia and Lenore Hill.

She grew up in Texas and Arizona. She came to Portales when she was 12. She married Stanley Eminger on June 1, 1946. She married James Carlisle on Aug. 30, 1947. She married Elmer Chambers on Nov. 27, 1972. She worked as a cook at the Wagon Wheel, the Country Kitchen, Marie’s Coffee Cup and the Portales Inn. She retired in 1992. She was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Family members said she enjoyed her morning coffee with friends at the Wagon Wheel Cafe, ceramics and other craft projects. She was active at the Portales Senior Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Raymond Hill; a sister, Jene Boyles; five grandchildren; and her husbands.

Survivors include four sons, Marvin Eminger (and wife, Cleta) of Cashion, Okla., James Carlisle (Diana) of Commerce City, Colo., John Carlisle (Tammy) of Cashion, Okla., and Ray Chambers (Roberta) of Santa Fe; seven daughters, Mary Hill (George) of Texico, Pearla Tivis (Delbert) of Clovis, Goldie Wall (Troy) of Lubbock, Clara Hughes (Ronny) of Plainview, Texas, Glenda Bell (Ernest) of Rose, Okla., Betty Etchepareborde (Nick) of Portales and Martha Robbins (Terry) of Azalea, Ore.; 79 grandchildren; 90 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Kenneth Hill of Movane, Kan., Walter Hill of Glenwood, Ark. and George Hill of Texico; a sister, Margaret Burchfield of Sumner, Wash.; numerous nieces and nephews.

The Rev. John Combs will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Floyd Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Duwain Hill, Keith Carlisle, Richard and Johnny Boyles, Bradley Bell, James and Walter Chambers, and Jory Russell.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Monte Jones, 73

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2005, at Community United Methodist Church on Haynes Canyon Road in High Rolls-Mt. Park.

Monte Jones, 73, formerly of Clovis, died Thursday, April 21, 2005.

He was born on Aug. 24, 1931, to Agrie and Elva Jones.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He earned a bachelor’s, master’s and an education specialist degree from Eastern New Mexico University. He did post graduate work at Colorado State College in Greeley, Colo. He taught his first year at Capitan in 1957-58, then he moved to Alamogordo, where he was an elementary school teacher and principal. He developed the special education program for the Alamogordo Public Schools, according to family members. Then he was special education director for the Gallup-McKinley County Schools. While in Gallup, he owned and managed an Indian jewelry business. He taught for the Richland, Wash. public schools until his retirement. Family members said he was an avid outdoorsman.

Survivors include a son, Monte Lynn Jones (and wife, Carol M.) of Las Cruces; and two sisters, Gervadene Hughes (Marion) of Pasco, Wash., and Lona Mae Waldo (Dwight) of Clovis.

Cremation has taken place.

The Reverend Lowell Swisher will officiate the services.

Arrangements are by Professional Crematory Services of Alamogordo.
