Highlands rolls over Hounds

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Center fielder Rich Janeway went 5-for-5 and drove in four runs, backing the seven-hit pitching of left-hander Lucas Spagnuolo as New Mexico Highlands rolled over Eastern New Mexico University 10-1 in non-league baseball on Tuesday.

Janeway hit three singles, a double and a solo homer in raising his batting average for the season to .427. The Cowboys (29-14) pounded 15 hits in avenging a 13-9 loss in Portales on April 9.

Spagnuolo (3-0) walked three and struck out four in his first complete game of the season. He had allowed 23 hits in 14 2/3 innings coming in.

Spagnuolo picked Bryan Moore off first after walking him to start the game, then avoided trouble with the help of double plays by his defense in each of the next three innings.

The Greyhounds (25-24) pulled to 3-1 in the top of the fifth on a leadoff double by Mark Wallace, a one-out single by Tyler Brown and Justin Gee’s sacrifice fly.

Junior Micah Bernhardt (0-2), who got a no-decision in a five-inning start against Highlands in the earlier meeting, allowed three runs and six hits in four innings this time. The Cowboys jumped on top in the first inning on a hit batsman, a walk, a wild pitch and Janeway’s two-run double down the right field line.

Mike Ramazzotti’s RBI single increased NMHU’s lead to 3-0 in the fourth, and Janeway reached Kelly Crain for a two-out homer in the seventh to make it 4-1.

Freshman reliever Kellen Smith gave up six runs — five earned — on six hits in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a two-run double from Tim Masters.

ENMU, still looking to nail down its first winning record in five years, ends the season with Lone Star Conference South doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday at division-leading Abilene Christian.
