April 24 Portales Junior HIgh News

Track results

April 14 found the boys’ track teams earning points in Melrose. Coach Jeremy Berry states that all the boys ran hard and competed well. The eighth-grade team placed fifth out of 14 teams with most of the runners improving on times and distances from the previous week. Highlights for the eighth grade came on first-place finishes in the mile medley relay and in the 800 meter relay. The seventh grade team earned a third place finish in the mile medley relay, and Chris Carby placed second in the mile.

After a schedule with three meets this past week, track season ends Thursday at the Fort Sumner Invitational.

No School Monday

Students have a day out of school Monday while school employees are scheduled for a full day of professional development.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes

The FCA had to cancel participation in the Relay for Life because of scheduling conflicts. However, they did purchase the T-shirts to support finding a cure for cancer that way. Another project they have accepted is to raise money for a former student with cancer. Four teachers have volunteered to be the target of a pie in the face. Students are collecting money for their favorite teacher, and the teacher with the most money “wins.”

Band excels

Director Brandon Boerio reports that the Portales Junior High Band earned a two rating in performance and a one rating in sight reading at their festival Wednesday.

Spirit week activities

Students get to show their spirit this week with a variety of activities. Tuesday the student council encourages students to wear their pajamas to school. Wednesday student council sponsor Amanda Burnett, a recent visitor to Hawaii, judges everyone for Hawaiian dress. Thursday is bad hair day, and Friday is pink day at the school. Friday the student council is sponsoring a dance during sixth and seventh periods. There is no charge for the dance, which is for all students not on the out-of-activities list.
