Gallegos stays perfect in 4-5A

Clovis senior Patricia Gallegos clinched at least the second seed in the District 4-5A tennis tournament Saturday with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 win over Caitlin Allen of Carlsbad.

Gallegos improved to 3-0 in district play with the win during a match at the Clovis High tennis courts.

“We’re glad for her to get that win and have that seeding set for her,” Clovis coach Billie Merritt.

However, her teammates didn’t fare as well, as the Cavegirls beat Clovis 7-2. In the boys match, Carlsbad blanked the Wildcats 9-0.

Gallegos teamed up with senior Britni Johnson for Clovis’ other win, a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Chelsea Hagar and Lupita Madrid in No. 1 doubles.

“The kids seems to be making progress,” Merritt said. “We just have such a tough district ... We’ve probably got the toughest district in the state, so it’s hard to compete well with that.”

Merritt said her team’s biggest struggle is with consistency.

“It’s just not being able to stay in the point as much as they need to,” Merritt said. “A lot of kids get tense when it’s real.
