Ruidoso beats PHS in tennis

RUIDOSO — Ruidoso swept District 4-3A tennis duals from Portales on Tuesday, winning the girls matchup 8-1 and the boys dual 7-2.

The Lady Rams (9-2 in duals) played shorthanded, with only four girls participating. They defaulted at Nos. 5 and 6 singles and at No. 3 doubles.

Portales' only win came at No. 1 doubles from Rachelle Self and Kaycee Quick, who beat Ruidoso's Beth Robinson and Kat Dunstan 6-3, 6-1.

Winners for the boys were Skyler Partin, 6-4, 6-1 over Matt Johnson at No. 1 singles; and Walker Partin, 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

The Rams and Lady Rams have district duals on tap Thursday against Lovington at home. Play is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

Golf — Playing in Roswell for the second consecutive day, Portales finished sixth in the Roswell High/Roswell Goddard Spring Classic at Spring River Golf Course on Tuesday.

The Rams compiled a team score of 334. New Mexico Military took the team title at 315, followed by Alamogordo at 322 and Socorro at 323.

Eighth-grader William Archibeque led the Rams with a round of 39-43 — 82, while fellow eighth-grader Donavin Sanchez shot 44-39 — 83 and junior Chris Adkins finished at 41-42 — 83. Junior Matthew Parkey shot 41-45 — 86 and senior Trevor Ferguson tallied 41-48 — 89.

Three PHS girls played in the tournament. Senior Michelle Miller shot 49-51 — 100, sophomore Tori Teague 64-53 — 117 and sophomore Lindsey Woodard 62-62 — 124.
