Rams fourth in Hobbs Invitational

HOBBS — Eighth-grader William Archibeque shot 40-38 — 78 and placed fourth in medalist competition Monday as the Portales High boys opened their season with a fourth-place finish in the Hobbs Invitational golf tournament.

Portales shot 336, finishing nine strokes behind runnerup Hobbs. Clovis, which had the top two individuals in Guillermo Chavez and Jordan Moore, ran away to a 20-stroke team victory.

PHS coach Patrick Crowley said the Rams played well, but can still improve.

“Our short game was not what it needed to be,” Crowley said. “We know what we need to work on.

“We hit 76 percent of our fairways and less than 40 percent of our greens (in regulation). We’ve got to be able to adjust to different courses and different weather conditions.”

Junior Chris Adkins, who did not qualify for one of the five team spots in PHS practice last week, nevertheless played as an individual on Monday and finished fourth individually with a round of 38-39 — 77.

Chavez, a fifth-year senior for Clovis, toured the course in one-over 73 to finish two shots ahead of Moore, a junior.

PHS was one short of a full girls team. Senior Michelle Miller led the Lady Rams at 102.

Hobbs had the top three individual finishers and won the tournament with a four-person score of 391. Sophomores Tori Teague (117) and Lindsey Woodard (128) were seeing their first varsity competition.

“The kids enjoyed themselves,” PHS girls coach Brenda Gomez said. “They realize they can get better, and I know they’ll work hard to do that.”

PHS teams make a quick turnaround today, playing in the Lovington Invitational.
