Hounds split twin bill at Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. — Senior right-hander Trevor Davis survived five errors by his infield and pitched Eastern New Mexico University past Cameron 5-4 on Friday in the first game of a Lone Star Conference baseball crossover doubleheader.

The host Aggies came back to win the second game 5-3, giving Cameron three wins in the four-game series.

The Greyhounds, coming off a series win at home against Southwestern Oklahoma, struggled against the Aggies, coach Phil Clabaugh said.

“As well as we played against Southwestern, we played that poorly against Cameron,” Clabaugh said.

Davis pitched a three-hitter, not allowing any hits until a leadoff single by Cameron’s Rod DeLong in the sixth. The Aggies (14-11) took advantage of two errors to score three runs in the sixth and get close, but Davis (6-3) got DeLong to hit into an inning-ending double play and then worked a perfect seventh.

“He threw really well,” Clabaugh said of Davis. “If it wasn’t for him, we probably would’ve been swept.”

ENMU (12-16) took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Brett Scherer in the first, then made it 3-0 in the fourth with two unearned runs off Cameron’s Eric Pilon (1-3), the second scoring on a double by Brian Green.

The Hounds went up 5-1 in the fifth when Josh Kuchta’s squeeze bunt with runners at second and third got past the mound and actually delivered both runners.

Leadoff man Bryan Moore went 3-for-4 for ENMU, accounting for half of the team’s hits, and scored twice.

Cameron beat Eastern starter Kelly Crain (3-6) for the second time in the series in the finale, taking control with a three-run second. Trey Chambers singled in the first run before Cody Brooks hit a two-run single.

Dustin Henry (3-1) allowed seven hits over six innings for the win, with Brad Passmore pitching the seventh for his second save of the series. Kuchta and Scherer each had two hits for ENMU.
