Wildcats second in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE — Clovis finished second Monday in the Albuquerque Public Schools Invitational golf tournament on a day when 40 to 50 mph winds sent scores skyrocketing.

Despite placing only one individual golfer in the top eight, Class 4A Los Alamos won the 13-team tournament by 15 strokes over Clovis with a 316 on the always-tough University of New Mexico South Championship Course.

“My hat goes off to the Los Alamos team,” Clovis coach George Simmons said. “316 is a fantastic score in those conditions.”

Five-time defending Class 5A champion La Cueva tied with Rio Rancho for third at 341.

Seniors Guillermo Chavez and Travis Reid led the way for the Wildcats. Chavez tied for fifth with a 78 and Reid for eighth with an 81.

“Anybody who broke 80 is pretty impressive in my book,” Simmons said.

Steve Saunders of La Cueva was the medalist at 1-over par 73.
