Sultemeier/Modesette

Lon and Linda Sultemeier of Melrose announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Kelli Sultemeier of Austin, Texas to Greg Modesette, of Austin, Texas, son of Carroll and Mollie Modesette of Rockdale, Texas.

The couple will exchange vows 6 p.m., March 19 at Melrose Baptist Church.

The reception will be at the Clovis Country Club.

The bride-elect is a 1975 graduate of Melrose High School.

She is employed at Round Rock ISD.

The prospective groom is a 1987 graduate of Linier High School in Austin.

He is employed at Henson Electric.

Invitations have been sent.

Corbin/Ritcherson

Brent and Sherry Corbin of Portales announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Brandee Corbin of Lubbock to Vic Ritcherson, of Lubbock, son of Jess and Vicki Ritcherson of Lubbock.

The couple will exchange vows 6 p.m., March 12 at White Knights Ballroom, Lubbock.

The reception will be at White Knights Ballroom.

The bride-elect is a 2001 graduate of Portales High School.

She is employed at Covenant Medical Center.

The prospective groom is a 1993 graduate of Cooper High School.

He is employed in construction.

The ceremony and reception are open to friends and relatives.

Organizations

Beta Phi

Beta Phi members gathered for their February business meeting. Vice President Carman Richard presided in the absence of president Gwen Williams. Following the reciting of the opening ritual, treasurer Collene Balkwin read her report and secretary June Patrick read the minutes from the January meeting and correspondence was received from Las Cruces District II who will host the 58th NMESA state convention to be help April 22-24. Their theme is “ESA’s Tropical Island Getaway” will be held at the Las Cruces Hilton.

Invitations were also received from District II and District III to attend their upcoming district meetings. The chapter is holding a Ways and Means raffle for a basket of goodies to be given away at the District I meeting Feb. 12. Tickets are $1each or 6 for $5 and can be purchased from any chapter member.

Publicity chairman Mary Ann Vinson said an article and calendars had been placed in the Clovis News Journal in the past month. Georgia Rundell discussed final plans for Beta Phi to host the upcoming District I meeting. Chairman Vinson will preside over the days events.

Other dignitaries to attend are the state president Marion Balow from Roswell and several past state presidents and state officers. Registration begins a 10 a.m. and will finish up with the balance of the meeting.

During the event, the District I’s Outstanding Woman of the Year will be announced. These ladies will then be presented on the state level at the state convention in April.

The chapter members held a secret ballot for the new chapter Sweetheart announced during the Valentine social by last year’s Sweetheart Williams. A sympathy card has been sent out to Williams on the death of her son-in-law.

Vinson announced the next business meeting will be at her home in March at 6:30 p.m. and the annual Bakeless Bake sale will be held.

Encanto Garden Club

Encanto Garden Club celebrated it’s 44th birthday with a luncheon and Valentine party held on Feb. 8, at Leal’s Restaurant, with Carol Whitaker serving as hostess.

Betty Dunlap, president, presided over the business meeting. Karen Allen read minutes of the last meeting and they were approved. Jane Rybolt gave a financial report and Elsie Dean showed the garden-related book she purchased for the club to present to the City Library.

The group voted to keep the same slate of officers for another year, and to change their meeting dates to the second Wednesday of each month instead of Tuesday.

“Thinking of you” cards were sent to Lela Ward, Beverly Miller, Thelma Curtis, and B.J. Goodwin.

Several seed catalogues were on display and Dunlap gave gardening tips for February on: Pruning at proper seasons, proper storage of vegetable and flower seed, and perennials for New Mexico.

Door prizes were won by Dunlap and Dean.

Fairfield Extension Club

Fairfield Extension Club met Feb. 11 at Jo Mae Priest’s home. Martha Watkins called the meeting to order. Ruby Jones read the minutes and everyone answered roll call to “What are you going to do for Valentine’s Day?” There were 16 members present with one guest.

Members are to bring three to four white elephant gifts for our club exchange in March. The club also discussed decorations and the menu for the time of fellowship.

Members need to be at the extension building by 9 a.m. to set up for the club exchange.

Mary Winkles thanked all who brought food and sent cards during her recovery from knee surgery.

Mare Wells taught us how to make earrings with stickers.

Ruby Jones and Betty Grabowski won the door prizes.

Glenda Belcher will attend the Feb. 25 meeting.Members are asked to have their apron magnets decorated for judging.

Artist of the month

Karen Holland

Karen Holland considers herself an “artist at heart” since she was a child. When her dad gave her and her brother a nickel for the corner store, she would go home with a new unsharpened pencil while her brother was happy with a soft drink.

Being able to be a part of an art class was enjoyable in the 70’s when a friend of the family invited Holland and her mother-in-law to her home with several other ladies. She had fun purchasing supplies and began to learn to use them.

A few years later, Holland enrolled in classes with Virgina Gregory and was able to invite two grandchildren to classes during two different summers. During that time, she took a couple classes at Clovis Community College under Bruce Defoor.

Bobby Wied is currently her instructor at weekly classes at Baxter-Curren Senior Center.

Holland said she feels most comfortable using the medium of oil and colored pencils. The subjects are usually of special meaning to her or for whom she is painting.

Holland’s art will be on display through the end of February at Clovis Carver Public Library.
