Floyd superintended resigns

The Floyd school board thought enough of the job Wayne McCullar was doing as superintendent that they unanimously approved a contract for next year at Monday night’s board meeting.

McCullar thought about his family, though, and turned in his resignation, effective after the end of the school year.

McCullar, reached via e-mail, explained that the resignation was a family matter. He and his wife, who is from Ecuador, opted to make a move before their 5-year-old daughter begins first grade, instead of a few years down the road.

“As a trained psychologist, I am aware that it is most important to move her now and not later,” McCullar said. “We have an opportunity in the (Florida) Keys that is attractive and puts us no less than a three-hour flight to our home in Guayaquil (Ecuador’s largest city).”

McCullar also said that he resigned with regret and that the board has been “very kind and supportive of my superintendency and my family.”

Lisa Schmidt, a member of the school board, said a search will begin immediately for McCullar’s replacement, but that they’re looking for somebody who will continue the work McCullar did.

“We are glad that he gave us this much notice,” Schmidt said. “We appreciate the enthusiasm with which he led this year. He’s pushed the motivation forward and we’re now moving in a positive direction.”

McCullar replaced Wally Feldman, who is now filling the same position in Zuni.

Chris Duncan, the principal at Floyd, said that he knew of McCullar’s intentions for some time before the board meeting, but feels that the school could still accomplish a lot under the remainder of McCullar’s term.

“He came in with high expectations for our district,” Duncan said, “and I think we met some of those goals and we plan to continue.”
