Conquerors post easy win
January 24, 2005
The Faith Triumphant boys basketball team bolted to a 13-0 lead in less than two minutes and cruised past overmatched Lubbock Christ the King 97-39 Monday afternoon at the FTCS gym.
Junior Caleb Richards led the Conquerors (8-3) with 22 points and 15 rebounds, with all but two of the team’s 12 players breaking into the scoring column.
“Everybody got a lot of playing time,” FTCS boys coach Shawn Kelly said. “The guys off the bench played really well. They came in and jumped right into what we were doing.”
FTCS led 55-24 at halftime, and the second half was played with a running clock.
Luis McCain added 17 points and four assists, Tim Smith scored 15 points and Eric Cathey chipped in 12 points and four steals.
For the winless Trojans, two players did all the scoring — freshman Michael Durand with 21 points and eighth grader Damian Rodriguez with 18. CTK’s seven-man squad included three eighth graders, two freshmen and two sophomores.
In girls action, the Lady Conquerors earned a 32-31 victory over Christ the King as seventh grader Reshea Kelly converted four consecutive free throws to break a 28-28 tie.
Kelly and Cassie Paden each scored 10 points for FTCS, and Jessica McCain added nine. Padden had 14 rebounds and four steals and Kelly grabbed nine boards and had five steals.
“We had a good practice on Friday, and it carried over,” FTCS girls coach Jessica Roberts said. “The girls played hard tonight for 32 minutes. I was proud of them.”
