James Albert Matlock, 93, of Clovis, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at Laurel Plains in Clovis.

He was born on May 31, 1911, in Devol, Okla., to James “J.H.” and Edith Matlock. He graduated from Ranchvale High School in 1929 and began farming in 1932. His father-in-law, C.E. “Bud” Thomas, was a contractor when he helped build Ranchvale Baptist Church along with the Dr. Herbert N. Bergstrom; he later served as Sunday School superintendent and treasurer. He married Mary Lucille Thomas on Feb. 2, 1935, in Clovis. He served two terms in the New Mexico State Legislature and was elected Curry County Commissioner for three terms. He had been county president of Farm Bureau and State and president of the Aberdeen-Angus Association. He worked hard to get rural telephones for Curry County and was on the Board of Directors 28 years, including 24 as president.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Thelma (Mrs. Ollie) Thomas; a brother, Damon Matlock; two grandchildren, Thomas Brett Burkett and Brandy J. Hayner.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Monte Matlock (and wife, Suzy) of Clovis; a daughter, Marsha Russell (Stephen) of Clovis; two grandsons, Matt Matlock (Kim) and Lee Conlin (Bobbie); four great-grandchildren, Mason Monte and Megan Makena Matlock, Tara Leigh and Tommy Lee Conlin; three sisters, Imagene House (C.A.), Joyce Santi (L.J.), and Martha Eaton, all of Clovis; three sisters-in-law, Robbie Lee Matlock, Mildred Baker, and Clodie Hurley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dr. Herbert Bergstrom and Rev. Hoyt Welch will officiate the services.

Private burial will be at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Sunday at Muffley Funeral Home for friends and family.
