Deer heads found, charges pending

Charges are expected to be filed this week in connection with the out-of-season killing and beheading of five deer, a wildlife official said.

Five missing deer heads have been found and results of the investigation will be taken to the district attorney’s office this week, said Wes Robertson, a New Mexico Game and Fish warden based in Clovis.

Robertson declined to give further details concerning the investigation into four mule deer and one whitetail deer found headless Dec. 31 about 10 miles north of Clovis on a farm in Ranchvale.

District Attorney Matt Chandler said Monday authorities told him the deer heads were found a mile north of a pond in Pleasant Hill. Game and Fish officials searched the pond about one week ago.

Chandler said he is visiting Santa Fe today and expects to meet Wednesday with Game and Fish officials.

“We will review (the evidence) and determine what charges if any will be filed,” Chandler said.

Officials questioned three suspects recently with one reportedly leading them to the pond where the suspect said the deer heads had been tossed. Authorities searched the water but didn’t find the deer heads.
