Welcome Back
Principal Steve Harris welcomes students to the new semester and a great beginning of a new year. Faculty and staff attended training Monday and Tuesday and welcomed students to a cold Wednesday morning.
Career opportunities
Thursday will find seventh grade students headed to Eastern New Mexico University to learn about different colleges and career options there. GEAR-UP has arranged for football coach Mark Rabando to welcome students and introduce them to their day-long activities there. With visits to each department, students learn about requirements and opportunities there. Highlights of the day include lunch and demonstrations from the Fine Arts department and Newton Hillard, science professor. GEAR-UP provided permission forms which parents must sign and students return for students to attend this event. Students will attend a study hall if they do not return the permission forms.
Career Wheel teachers are working with eighth grade students coordinating a job-shadowing day for students. After selecting a career which interests students, they attend work with a professional in that field for a day.
Parent/Teacher conferences
Teachers welcome parents Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for conferences. Parents can pick up student report cards and visit with teachers about student progress so far this year.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
School will be closed Jan. 17 in observation of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Students in Donna King’s classes finished reading literature based on the challenges of being different. Then they made anti-prejudice posters to display in the school.
Basketball schedule
Students had only one day of games scheduled the first week of the new year, but have a full schedule this week. Monday finds the eighth grade boys’ “A” and “B” teams and the seventh grade “A” team challenging Gattis in Clovis. The girls’ same team classifications host the Gattis girls on that day.
Tuesday the girls’ seventh and eighth grade “A” teams travel to Clovis to play Marshall.
Thursday those two teams travel to Texico while the boys’ seventh and eighth grade “A” teams invite Texico to our home court.
Saturday finds both boys’ “A” teams on the bus to Ruidoso while all four girls’ teams host Ruidoso. Both “B” games tip off first.
New teacher at PJHS
Junior High students and staff welcome Ruben Tellez as the new ESL/English teacher. The former teacher, Jay Smith, left the school to work with insurance in Albuquerque.
