Elida falls in fifth-place game

NEW DEAL, Texas — The Elida boys basketball team got thumped on Saturday, but the Tigers didn’t come away from the Mean Green Classic empty-handed.

Elida (4-4) won twice in consolation bracket play on Friday to advance to Saturday morning’s fifth-place game, where the Tigers were pounded by Smyer 52-17.

“We were just out of gas,” Elida boys coach Darrell Chenault said after his squad played its fourth game in less than 48 hours.

On Friday, the Tigers defeated Anton, Texas 50-44 and Springlake-Earth, Texas 55-33. Freshman Wesley Gilmore led Elida in both games with 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Elida’s girls lost their two games in the tournament, including a 67-62 overtime decision to Smyer (Texas) in Friday’s consolation semifinals. Synatschk led the winners with 41 points, including 19-of-26 from the free throw line.

Kodi Armitage scored 12 points for the Lady Tigers (2-3), while Casey Ford and Adrienne Coe added 11 apiece. For the game, Elida converted 20-of-27 free throws as a team.

Lady Broncos finish sixth

WHITHARRAL, Texas — Petersburg (Texas) jumped to a 14-7 first-quarter lead on Saturday and went on to be Floyd 47-39 in the fifth-place game of the Whitharral Invitational basketball tournament.

The Lady Broncos (4-5) trailed by 14 before warming up with 17 points in the final period. Jewlie Paiz led Floyd in scoring with 12 points.

In Friday’s consolation semifinals, Floyd posted a 54-38 victory over Kress (Texas). Noel Carpenter scored 12 points and Paiz and Darcee Chenault added 10 apiece for Floyd.

Coyotes nab seventh place

TULAROSA — Tyler Wilhoit scored 20 points Saturday and the Dora Coyotes held off Capitan 59-57 to claim seventh place in the Tularosa Basin Classic basketball tournament.

J.R. Gonzales and Austin Prewett each added 11 points for the Coyotes (4-6).

On Friday, Dora dropped an 80-75 decision to Cloudcroft in the consolation semifinals despite 23 points from Wilhoit and 18 from Travis Belcher.
