Hounds win first

ALAMOSA, Colo. — Forward Jamaal Hunnicutt and point guard Jolen Montoya combined for 45 points, including 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 1:22, and the Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team pulled out a 72-67 win over Adams State College Saturday night.

The Greyhounds (1-1), coming off a 31-point loss at home to Lubbock Christian in their season opener on Thursday, trailed by 13 points with 10 minutes left and didn’t take their first lead until senior Irshaun Pinckney hit a 3-pointer with 2:52 left to push the Hounds in front 67-65.

Kevin McCarroll’s basket tied it for the Grizzlies (0-1) with 1:42 to go before Hunnicutt, who hit 6-of-9 shots from the field and 11-of-13 from the line, gave Eastern the lead for good by hitting two free throws on the next trip down.

Pinckney also reached double figures with 11 points. David Mitchell, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound senior forward, led Adams with 25 points while guards Greg Baker and Larry Charles added 13 and 12, respectively.

Zias split in Colorado — At Pueblo, Colo., the ENMU women lost for the first time in three games on Saturday, falling to host Colorado State-Pueblo 66-60 in the Kaly Shrine Classic.

ENMU rallied from a six-point halftime deficit on Friday to beat Nebraska-Kearney 71-64, using a 9-0 run to erase a four-point deficit with eight minutes left.

CSU-Pueblo (1-1), which lost in overtime on Friday to Northern Michigan, took command on Saturday with an 18-7 run in the second half featuring three 3-pointers by reserve Kyle Haag to erase a 42-41 Zias lead.

Hilary Rehfeld scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Thunderwolves, while Haag finished 4-of-6 from 3-point range for 12 points and Ebony Walker added 11.

Senior Mika Robertson scored 19 points for the Zias on 7-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Tiana Bryant added 13 points and 6 rebounds, and Tia Doss scored 12 points.
