Bonnie Cooper, 76

Bonnie Marie Cooper, 76, of Cathedral City, Calif., died Friday Oct. 22, 2004, in Palm Desert, Calif.

She was born on June 14, 1928, in Rotan, Texas, to Samuel and Addie Cook.

She moved to Portales at an early age. She graduated from Portales High School in 1948. She married Delbert Cooper on Nov. 24, 1948, in Portales. She was an accountant for 40 years, retiring in 1990 as senior vice president.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Lorena Bousman and Edna McKinzie; and two brothers, Curtis and Clyde Cook.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice Burrell of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Cecilia Burbank of McCloud, Calif.; a sister, Maxcine Russell of Clovis; two brothers, Cecil Cook of Portales, and Chester Cook of Albuquerque; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Private arrangements are under the directions of the Neptune Society.

Delbert Cooper, 78

Delbert I. Cooper, 78, of Cathedral City, Calif., died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, in Hemet, Calif.

He was born on Nov. 5, 1925, in Portales, to Lexter and Lola Mae Cooper.

He married Bonnie Cook on Nov. 24, 1948, in Portales. He graduated from Floyd High School and Eastern New Mexico University. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1946, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He worked for Western Gillette and Roadway Express for 30 years, then owned Continental Traffic, retiring in 1990.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Kenneth Cooper.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Cooper of Cathedral City, Calif.; two daughters, Janice Burrell of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Cecilia Burbank of McCloud, Calif.; a sister, Marjorie Strebeck of Clovis; a brother, J.D. Cooper of Scottsdale, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

Arrangements were by the Neptune Society of California.

J.E. Meadors

Mr. J.E. Meadors, 85, of Portales, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at Laurel Ridge Healthcare in Clovis.

He was born on March 15, 1919, in Mart, Texas, to Lee and H.T. Meadors.

He grew up in the Waco, Texas area near Elk, Texas. He served during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He married Mary Dell Phillips on Dec. 20, 1943, in Urbana, Ill. They farmed for a short time in Childress, and on a trip to California, they stopped in Carlsbad, where he accepted a job as an apprentice carpenter. He later joined the Carpenter’s Union, of which he was a member for 47 years. He worked as a carpenter throughout New Mexico for more than 30 years before retiring in 1983. After retiring, he continued doing side jobs until four years ago. He was a member of Victory Life Church in Portales and the Portales Senior Citizens. Family members said he enjoyed dancing, which he did every time he had a chance.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, J.D. and Tuney Meadors; a sister, Edna Young; and by his wife.

Survivors include a son, Richard Meadors (and wife, Sandra) of Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Vannett Field (Don) of Dora; five brothers, Calvin, Harold, and Jay Meadors, all of Waco, Texas, Russ Meadors of California, and Jack Meadors of Florida; four grandchildren, Brandy Wagenschein of Corpus Christy, Texas, Travis Field of Dora, and Allison and Bethany Field, both of Tulsa, Okla.; three great-grandchildren, Hunter, Ashten, and Madison Wagenschein.

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday Victory Life Church in Portales. Mack Powers will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Dora.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Baptist Childrens Home or the Christian Childrens Home in Portales.
