Arthur Scott Murrell, 78, formerly of Las Cruces, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at the home of his sister in Clovis.

He was born on June 19, 1926, in Belen, to Mary Davis “Mayme” and Joe T. Murrell.

He moved to Clovis in 1928 with his family and graduated from Clovis High School. He joined the Navy in 1944 and served in the Pacific during World War II. Following his military service he worked at White Sands Missile Range and later worked for New Mexico State University’s Physical Science Department in Las Cruces. He worked as an Astronomical Observer for 40 years. Family members said he was passionate about astronomy and he assisted in establishing the Astronomical Society of Las Cruces. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Cooper Murrell; and two cousins, Ralph and Bert Sanders.

Survivors include a twin sister, Betty Hicks (and husband, George) of Clovis; a stepbrother, Terrill Murrell of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a niece, Iantha Hicks of Dallas; and three cousins, Hilda Sanders, David Sanders and family, both of Clovis, and Cora Lee Haley and family of Colorado.

Cremation will take place.
