Carroll Wilson, 87, of Sherman, Texas, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004 at Wilson M. Jones Hospital in Sherman.

Mr. Wilson was born on Aug. 24, 1917, in Denton, Texas, to Carrie and L. A. Wilson.

He graduated from high school in Denton, Texas, in 1934, and studied at North Texas State Teachers College where he received a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in math. He briefly taught high school before joining the U.S. Navy in 1942, serving in the Pacific on the USS Randolph. He received specialized training at MIT and Princeton University. In 1946 he took a position in the math department at Eastern New Mexico University. He taught there until retiring in 1984 and served as department chair for some of that time.

He married Vernelle Cope on May 31, 1941, in Denton, Texas. After her death, he married Helen Keene on Aug. 10, 1974, in Sherman. He was an active member and deacon of Third and Kilgore Church of Christ. Family members said he enjoyed playing golf and bridge.

He moved to Sherman in 2002 where he was a member of the Western Heights Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lemuel and Andrew Wilson; and by his first wife, Vernelle.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Keene Wilson of Sherman, Texas; a son, Dr. Walter Wilson (and wife Diana) of Soquel, Calif.; a daughter, Dr. Cara Wilson of Ruidoso; two stepsons, Wayne Keene (Sally) of Sherman and Mark Keene (Linda) of Howe, Texas, and a step-daughter, Diane Smith (Steve) of Grand Prairie, Texas; four grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and 14 step-great-grandchildren.

Dan Rouse will officiate the services, assisted by David Bennett.

Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Lieb, Gene Weems, Don Keene, Scott Jarvis, Harold Knox, Dick Hood, Delbert Rector and George Brumfield.
