Warren Armstrong, 70

Warren Armstrong, 70, of Ketchum, Okla., died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at his home.

He was born on Oct. 16, 1933, in Tidioute, Pa., to Mead and Mary Armstrong.

He married Joan Gregory on April 19, 1974, in Minneapolis. He received a bachelor’s degree from the Baptist College and Seminary in Pennsylvania, a master’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Michigan and Holy Orders from the Diocese of Oklahoma. He president and professor at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kan., from 1983 until 1993; president and professor at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales from 1975 until 1983; dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor at St. Cloud State University from 1970 until 1975; associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and associate professor of history at University of Wisconsin in Whitewater, Wis., from 1965 until 1970; assistant and associate professor of history at Olivet College in Michigan from 1961 until 1965; and pastor for West Bainbridge Baptist Church in New York from 1954 until 1956.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Linda Armstrong, Heidi Neis (and husband, Dino), Susan Sohlo (Brad), and Pamela Lawrence (Phil); a son, Jack Fitzsimmons (Laura); nine grandchildren, Amanda and Matt Neis, Travis, Jack, Katie and Tyler Fitzsimmons, Madeline, Huston, and Maizie Lawrence.

Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. (CDT) at All Saints Episcopal Church in Miami, Okla. Robert Moody and Father Noel Doherty will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Hendersonville Cemetery in Mercer, Pa.

Memorial contributions may be made to the All Saints Episcopal Church of Miami, Okla., Wichita State University or Eastern New Mexico University.

Gladys Ferguson, 80

Gladys Ferguson, 80, of Portales, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at Odessa Medical Center in Odessa, Texas.

She was born on Jan. 3, 1924, in Lorain, Ohio, to Arelia and Charles Zimmerman.

She grew up in Lorain. She married John Ferguson on March 26, 1941, in Bay City, Ill. They moved to Portales in 1947. Family members said she was a devoted wife and mother, enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening, and seemed able to make anything grow, including African Violets by the hundreds. She attended the University Baptist Church in Portales. She moved to Odessa about two years ago to be near her son and daughter-in-law. She attended the First United Methodist Church in Odessa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Elmer and Floyd Zimmerman; three sisters, Edna Epstein, Lois Fortman and Eleanor Williams; a daughter, Sue Ferguson; a son, David Ferguson; a grandson, Randal Ferguson; and her husband, John D. Ferguson.

Survivors include two sons, Jim Ferguson (and wife, Sharon) of Roswell and Dan Ferguson (Rhonda) of Odessa; a daughter-in-law, Leadell “Mrs. David” Ferguson of Lubbock; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. Terry Tamplin will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Joe Grandbury, Jeremy Ferguson, Cody Doran, Mike Richardson, Bill Brown and Rick Vickery.
