Mrs. Betty Sommerville, 71, of Clovis, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at her home.

She was born on Sept. 29, 1932, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Alma and Alonzo Harter.

She attended school in Des Moines. She married Larry G. Sommerville on Nov. 21, 1956, in Las Vegas, Nev. She was active in church and enjoyed singing, especially gospel music, family members said. She sponsored a child in Africa for more than 25 years. The Sommervilles moved to Portales in 1990, and for the past two-and-a-half years she has made her home in Clovis with her daughter and son-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Wallie and James Harter; a daughter, Rebecca Osborne; and her husband.

Survivors include three sons, James Sommerville (and wife, Therese) of Santee, Calif., David Sommerville (Deana) of Campo, Calif., and Larry Sommerville (Rebecca) of Albuquerque; two daughters, Janice Bambalere (John) of El Paso, Texas, and Kelley Herald (Scott) of Clovis; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Donald Hay will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers are James, David, Larry and Nathan Sommerville, Scott Herald and James Williams.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
