NMHU routs Greyhounds

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Brian Fryer was a one-man wrecking crew on Tuesday.

The senior center fielder went 4-for-4 with a triple, a homer, three runs scored and four driven in as New Mexico Highlands routed Eastern New Mexico University 9-1 in college baseball.

Fryer raised his season’s batting average to .492, driving in single runs with his triple in the third and a base hit in the fourth and capping the scoring with a two-run homer off Trevor Davis in the eighth.

He had plenty of help. The Cowboys (28-20), who have won 22 of their last 30 games, pounded five ENMU pitchers for 14 hits, including five for extra bases, and also drew seven walks en route to their fourth win over the Greyhounds (17-26-1) in five meetings this season.

ENMU minimized the damage a bit by turning three double plays in the contest.

Nolan Phillips, Cameron Shick, Denver Easton and Ben Dubin all had two hits for the Cowboys, and Phillips and Shick each drove in a pair of runs.

Meantime, five NMHU pitchers combined to limit the Hounds to nine hits, all singles. Derek Adams (1-1) worked the fourth nd fifth innings, surviving three hits and a walk, to register the win.

ENMU tied the score in the second inning on singles by Brett Scherer and Boyd Erickson and an RBI grounder by Matt Hinojosa.

Erickson and Tyler Hayes each had a pair of hits for Eastern. Left-hander Antwhan Yazzie (0-2) took the loss, allowing 10 hits and seven runs over four innings.
