Lady Cats continue string of routs

ROSWELL — The New Mexico Activities Association wasn’t thinking of Clovis when instituting a 35-point “mercy rule” early this season. It just seems that way.

With the clock running for the entire second half for the fourth time in five games, Clovis routed Roswell Goddard 62-24 on Saturday in a non-district game.

Sophomore Brittany Blackmon led a balanced attack with 23 points and added seven rebounds as the Lady Wildcats (13-2) won their season-high seventh straight game.

Tori Quintana, Roxanne Luera and Aimee Hilburn all added seven points each for Clovis, ranked fourth in last week’s Albuquerque Journal Coaches’ Poll.

Clovis coach Miles Watters said his team has done a good job of staying focused during the string of blowouts, which includes an 18-point win over Portales.

“Our kids jumped quick and played really hard,” Watters said. “You can’t take anything away from the kids’ effort. We’re just playing at a really high level right now.”

Watters said he’s looking forward to this week when the Lady Wildcats play three games, starting with Tuesday’s game against defending Class 3A Portales.

“We’ve had some pretty good practices this week and hopefully we’re ready to step up to the competition,” Watters said. “Hopefully this will prepare us for district.”

On a down note, Luera injured a knee late in the game and Watters said it’s possible she could be out for the season.

Clovis raced out to a 36-2 lead 12 minutes into the game before settling on a 43-6 halftime lead. The Lady Wildcats harassed Goddard (3-6) into 1-of-12 shooting in the first half.

“We really played great defense,” Watters said. “In the first half they couldn’t even get a look at the basket.”
