Bernice Allen, 89

Bernice Allen, 89, of Portales, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at the Retirement Ranch in Clovis.

Thomas Davis, 93

Mr. Thomas E. Davis Jr., 93, of Milnesand, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.

He was born on Nov. 24, 1910, in Lavaca, Ark., to Mary Emily and Thomas Edward Davis Sr.

His family moved to Milnesand in 1915, when he was a child. He attended grade school at Eagle Hill and graduated from Elida High School. He attended New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, graduating in 1934 with a degree in range science. He began working for the Bureau of Land Management until he was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II, where he served in Burma. Upon being discharged, he returned to work for the Bureau of Land Management. In 1957, he retired and returned to Milnesand to take over operation of Eagle Hill Ranch. He ranched for many years with his brothers and later with his nephew. He had served on the Border Soil And Water Conservation Board and was a member of the New Mexico Cattle Growers Association. He continued ranching until 1998, when his health began to fail. Family members said his hobbies included ranching, hunting, fishing and the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Paul Davis and Howard Davis.

Survivors include a nephew, Tom Davis (and wife, Sharon) of Portales; a sister-in-law, Maguette Davis; and great-nieces and nephews, Chad and Rebecca Davis and Micah and Peter Thompson.

Matt Rush and Bryan Loughmiller will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be his friends.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Services are at 2 p.m. today at Portales Cemetery.

Edna Goolsby, 97

Edna Goolsby, 97, of Portales, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at the home of her daughter.

She was born on June 10, 1910, in Pauls Valley, Okla., to Ada Bessie and James Edgar Horton.

She attended school in Olustee, Okla. She married Anison D. Goolsby on May 2, 1927, in Harmony, Okla. They moved to Fort Sumner, where she and her husband farmed until his death in 1980. She continued to live in Fort Sumner until 1990, when she moved to Broadmoore Acres in Portales. Family members said she enjoyed traveling, needle craft and gardening. She was a member of University Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Wanda Lee Goff; four brothers: Arthur, Finis, Clarence, and Calvin Horton; three sisters: Ruby Horton, Minnie Lee Davis and Irene Peavey; and her husband.

Survivors include a son, Larry Goolsby (and wife, Leslie) of Gainesville, Texas; a daughter, Joye Ledgewood (Lee) of Portales; four brothers: J.E. Horton of Ardmore, Okla., and Wendell, Jim and Bruce Horton, all of Oklahoma City; a sister, Erma Wilson of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Tommy and Marcee Goff, Kenneth and Beverly Goff, Bobby and Gwen Goff, Donald and Pam Ledgewood, Sandra and Steve Harris, Lexie and Kevin Myers and Landall Goolsby; 16 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Steve Smith will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Fort Sumner Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tommy, Bobby and Kenneth Goff, Donald Ledgewood, Steve Harris, Landall Goolsby, and Kevin Myers.

Services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday at University Baptist Church in Portales.

Bobby Gras, 47

Bobby Gras, 47, of Levelland, Texas, died Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at Covenant Lakeside Hospital in Lubbock.

He was born on May 28, 1956, in Portales.

In 1979 he moved to Levelland from Portales. He was active in league bowling in Levelland and was on a number of championship teams. He was a plumber for Area Wide Plumbing in Levelland and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Kay Gras.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandy Marie Carrasco of Amarillo; a brother, Herman Gras of Portales; and a sister, Mary LeClear of Clovis.

The Rev. Michael Holmes will officiate the services in Levelland.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. today at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ricky, Randy Sr., Brian, Eugene Jr., and Randy Edward LeClear and Randal Burnett.

Arrangements are by George C. Price Funeral Directors of Levelland.

Services are at 10 a.m. (CST) today at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Levelland, Texas.

Charles Knowles, 73

Charles Knowles, 73, of Portales, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, in Farmington.

Ruby Johnson, 88

Ruby Faye Johnson, 88, of Clovis, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at Laurel Ridge Healthcare in Clovis.

She was born on Feb. 25, 1915, in Purdy, Okla., to Sweeney Pike and Emma Rhetta Hogue Simms.

She married J.D. Johnson on Feb. 27, 1937, in Walters, Okla. They moved to Clovis in 1941. Family members said she was a devoted wife and mother who loved to read, cook, needlepoint and crochet.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Manzy Simms; and a twin brother, Hoss Simms.

Survivors include two sons, Mike Johnson (and wife, Lesley) of Clovis and Tom Johnson of Phoenix; two grandchildren, Tracy Ladd of Lubbock and Jay Brian Johnson of Santa Fe.

Jon Forrest will officiate the services.

Burial will be in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis.

Pallbearers will be Dan Stoddard, Brett Ladd, Jerry Beach, Bill Wallace, Raymond Furrow and Kenneth Cable.

Memorial contributions may be made to the computer fund at First Christian Church in Clovis.
