Zia volleyball team rebounds

The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team bounced back from a three-game sweep with a 30-24, 23-30, 28-30, 30-19, 15-11 win over Angelo State in a Lone Star Conference South Division match Saturday at San Angelo, Texas.

Junior Anna Bellum collected 14 kills, 17 digs and four aces for the Zias (8-12, 3-2 South). Emilie Rodman added 13 kills, while Kelley McGinty chipped in 12 kills and 16 digs.

The Rambelles (8-15, 1-1) were coming off a huge win on Friday night in five games over West Texas A&M, ending the Lady Buffs’ 77-match winning streak in conference play.

In Friday’s match at Abilene, Texas, the Wildcats (17-6, 1-0) cruised to their 10th win in 11 matches by finishing off the Zias 30-17, 30-24, 30-16. Haylee Hartline had 16 kills, Kellen Morrow collected 19 digs and Amanda Slate served up five aces for ACU.

No one reached double figures for the Zias in either kills (McGinty was the team leader with seven) or digs (Bellum and Jennifer Blackburn had nine apiece).

ENMU runners take sixth

COMMERCE, Texas — The ENMU men and women finished sixth on Saturday morning in the Lion Invitational cross country hosted by Texas A&M-Commerce.

Emporia State took the men’s team title with 45 points, led by individual winner Andrew Bird in 25:32.08 over eight kilometers, while ENMU finished with 152.

The Greyhounds’ top runner was sophomore Orlando Sanchez, 18th in the 8-kilometer race in a time of 27:06.66.

The Zias, who had 123 team points, were led by junior Karissa Huskey, 12th in 24:38.92, and senior Leora Todacheenie, 16th in 24:55.70, in a 6K race.

The University of North Texas took team honors with 31 points, led by individual winner Jessica Schmidt in 21:42.78.
