October 4, 2003
ALBUQUERQUE — The Clovis Lady Wildcats improved to 13-2 overall (3-1 District 4-5A) with a 25-13, 25-17, 26-24 win over Manzano on Saturday.
The Lady Cats dominated the first game, but had to play from behind for a while in the second game and won a seesaw battle in the third to close it out. Manzano led 24-23 before CHS got the final three points.
Clovis took the junior varsity match 25-12, 25-14, improving to 10-4 for the season, while the Lady Cats’ “C” team improved to 7-8 with a 25-12, 25-12 win over the Lady Monarchs.
CLOVIS 2, RUIDOSO 0 (girls soccer) — Eighth-grader Laura Esquivel broke a scoreless tie by knocking home a rebound shot early in the second half Saturday and the Clovis High Lady Wildcats went on to blank Ruidoso in a varsity girls soccer match at Yucca Soccer Complex.
Freshman Callie Rush scored unassisted from close range with about 15 minutes left for the Lady Wildcats (2-12).
The teams were originally scheduled for a junior varsity match, but the Lady Warriors do not have a junior varsity squad.
CLOVIS 3, RUIDOSO 2, PKs (boys soccer) — The Clovis High boys rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force overtime and the Wildcats edged Ruidoso on penalty kicks Saturday at Yucca Soccer Complex.
Matt Loewen cut the Warriors’ lead in half with a goal about 20 minutes into the second period on a through pass from Kendal Essex. Then Essex tied it with about five minutes left in regulation after intercepting a Ruidoso clearing pass and scoring from about 23 yards out to the upper left corner of the net.
CHS (2-12) outscored the Warriors 3-2 on PKs, getting goals from Eliud DeLeon, Scott Elliott and Loewen. Loewen’s goal put the Cats ahead, and goalkeeper Dewayne Roberts stopped Ruidoso’s final shot to nail down the win.
Clovis coach Shaun Gill said the match was added to the schedule to replace New Mexico Military, which canceled out of an earlier match.
