Mr. Travis H. Gossett, 78, of Portales, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at his home.

He was born on Sept. 18, 1925, in Ryan Jefferson County, Okla., to Ida and Charlie Gossett.

His family settled in Roosevelt County west of Floyd when he was 8. He served in the Army from 1943 until 1945. After the war he worked at the post office and at the Gordon’s Store in Floyd. He married Alice Elliott on Dec. 3, 1951. In 1962, they moved to the farm and ranch where he lived the remainder of his life.

Family members said he was always the designated family clown and comedian and enjoyed hunting for arrowheads. He was a member of the Third and Kilgore Church of Christ. He served on the board for the local water co-op and for the Roosevelt County Farmer’s Union.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Virgil, Preston and Roy; and a sister, Bertha Odom.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jeff Gossett (and wife, Marian) of Wolfforth, Texas, Gregg Gossett (Yvette) of Portales and John Gossett (Lisa) of Fort Stockton, Texas; a daughter, Kathy Sanderson (David) of Abernathy, Texas; five grandchildren; and two brothers, E.J. and Clifton Gossett, both of Portales.

David Bennett and Dan Rouse will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Floyd Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jack Tarver, Jack Merrick, Randy McCasland, Kent Hilliard, Don Essary, Ed Hitson, Charles Terry, Troy Goyne, Cary Russell, David, Buck and Jess Gossett and Sandy and Gerald Elliott.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Delphos volunteers. Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
