Dr. Howard Lyons Stone, 76, of Denton, Texas, a retired professor of education at Texas Woman’s University, died Sunday, July 13, 2003, in Denton.

He was born on Oct. 20, 1926, in Kuling, Kiangsi Province, China, to the Rev. Albert H. and Mabel Lyons Stone.

He attended Iolani School in Honolulu, Manhattan Junior High School in Manhattan, Kan., Harvard Military academy in Pumobna, Calif. and University of Washington at Pullman. He received a bachelor’s degree from Hofstra University and a Ph.D. from the University of Northern Colorado. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Sarah Elizabeth Ulrich on Aug. 24, 1947, in Long Island, N.Y. He was an instructor at Eastern New Mexico University for four years.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Stone of Denton, Texas; four sons, Bernard Robert “Beau” Stone of Roswell, Donald Hendrix Stone of Southlake, Texas, Benjamin Edward Stone of Rio Rancho and Stephen Andrew Stone of Denton; two sisters, Margaret Moore of Longwood, Fla. and Mary Yahnker of Greenville, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Visitation is scheduled from 6 p.m. (CDT) until 8 p.m. Thursday at DeBerry Funeral Directors of Denton.
