Rose G. Smothers, 94, of Clovis, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at Laurel Plains Healthcare in Amarillo.

She was born Dec. 9, 1908, in Armington, Ill., to James and Anna Brandt McDowell.

She moved to Farwell in 1917, and the family lived in a tent while building a house.

She moved to Clovis in 1924, graduating from high school in 1925 at age 16. She then attended one year of business school. She began her career in business in 1926 working for J.C. Penney in Clovis. She worked for several corporations and lived in many locations throughout the country, retiring in 1984 from Cornell and Co. CPA in Amarillo.

In 1939 she married Melvin J. “Red” Smothers.

She was a longtime member of San Jacinto United Methodist Church in Amarillo, serving on many committees, including chair of the administrative board. She served the Pilot Club of Amarillo in many capacities, including president. She was an active bridge player. She remained an active volunteer until her move to Clovis in May.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and eight brothers and sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Carter (and wife, Joanne) Smothers of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Raymond Smothers (JoAnne) of San Antonio, Texas; five step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, including Peggy Butler, Wanda Louderback and Cindy Blair, all of Clovis.

The Rev. Bill Fitzgerald will officiate the services, assisted by the Rev. Bobby Medford.
