Charley Hill, 79

Mr. Charley Elbert Hill, 79, of Portales, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

He was born on Jan. 3, 1924, in Maud, Texas, to Effie and Charley Hill.

Mr. Hill was one of two sets of twins. The Hills moved to Roosevelt County about 1929. In 1943 he joined the U.S. Navy and served until 1946. After returning home, he worked on the farm driving tractors and eventually established a dirt moving and land leveling business. He married Betty Jo Carlisle on May 29, 1954, in Roswell. He had been retired since 1990. He was a member of the VFW and the Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Melvin Seim Hill and Hardy Hill, a sister, Mary Patterson and by his wife, Betty Jo, who died April 17, 1995.

He is survived by two daughters, Sandy Wells of Portales and Effie Weingart (and husband, David) of McConnelsville, Ohio; four grandchildren, Cynthia and Scott Wells, Mandy Dawson and Kristi Weingart; a great-grandchild, Jordan Dawson; a twin brother, Harley Delbert “Pug” Hill of Portales; two brothers, A.C. “Bud” Hill of Portales and Will Hill of Jal; and a sister, Ruth Gibbs of Clovis.

The Revs. Kenneth Dunsworth and Terry Hill will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Elmer Jones, Tommy Kent, Bill Bailey, Thane Floyd, Jimmy Hill and Scott Wells.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales. Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.
