Mrs. Mary Opal Tate, 93, of Broadview, a retired school teacher, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.

She was born on Nov. 11, 1909, in Bellview, to James and Lida Bell Shaddix Miller.

She attended school in the Bellview and Hollene area and West Texas Teachers College in Canyon, Texas. She married Wayne Tate on April 3, 1931. They lived in Clovis before World War II. She worked as a welder at the Calship shipyard in Los Angeles during the war. They moved to Broadview in 1946 and operated Tate’s Mercantile until they both entered nursing homes. She was a member of the Rosedale Baptist Church and Rebekah’s Lodge.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Nellie Elenor Rhea; a son, Wayne Dean Tate; three daughters, Jane and Joan Tate and Lida "Suzy" Corrine Harrison; and two brothers, Jordan Miller and James “J.M.” Miller.

She is survived by her grandson, David Harrison of Broadview; her niece and caretaker, Carolyn Tate Harris; nephews, Joe and Jimmy Miller; and numerous nieces and nephews

Gary Ford will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Stephen Haynes, Plains Regional Medical Center’s medical floor staff and the Adobe Junction staff at Retirement Ranch.

Arrangements are by Steed-Todd Funeral Home of Clovis.
