Dr. Howard Stone, 76

Dr. Howard Lyons Stone, 76, of Denton, Texas, a retired professor of education at Texas Woman’s University, died Sunday, July 13, 2003, in Denton.

He was born on Oct. 20, 1926, in Kuling, Kiangsi Province, China, to the Rev. Albert H. and Mabel Lyons Stone.

He attended Iolani School in Honolulu, Manhattan Junior High School in Manhattan, Kan., Harvard Military academy in Pumobna, Calif. and University of Washington at Pullman. He received a bachelor’s degree from Hofstra University and a PhD. from the University of Northern Colorado. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Sarah Elizabeth Ulrich on Aug. 24, 1947, in Long Island, N.Y. He was an instructor at Eastern New Mexico University for four years.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Stone of Denton, Texas; four sons, Bernard Robert “Beau” Stone of Roswell, Donald Hendrix Stone of Southlake, Texas, Benjamin Edward Stone of Rio Rancho and Stephen Andrew Stone of Denton; two sisters, Margaret Moore of Longwood, Fla. and Mary Yahnker of Greenville, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Visitation is scheduled from 6 p.m. (CDT) until 8 p.m. Thursday at DeBerry Funeral Directors of Denton.

Arrangements are by DeBerry Funeral Directors of Denton. Services are at 11 a.m. (CDT) Monday at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Denton, Texas.

Janis Bundy, 55

Mrs. Janis Bundy, 55, of Portales, died Monday, July 14, 2003, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.

She was born on Aug. 12, 1947, in Roswell, to LaVera and Charles Copeland.

She graduated from Roswell High School in 1965. She attended Roswell Community College for two years, and worked as a records clerk at New Mexico Military Institute. She moved to Portales in the fall of 1968 to attend Eastern New Mexico University.

She married Gene Bundy on April 5, 1969, in Roswell. She received a college degree in 1981. She was executive director for Camp Fire for Girls for two years and was active in the Clovis Altrusa Club. She formerly worked at the Portales News-Tribune. She was employed at ENMU as a graphic designer and as Curriculum Coordinator.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Portales, active in the Bell Choir. In Clovis she was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Kathie Haman (and husband, Chuck) of Portales and Kirstan Raber (Scott) of Wichita Falls, Texas; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Amanda, Emilee and Joshua Haman and Ethan and Kaitlin Raber.

The Rev. Frank Sherman will officiate the services, assisted by the Rev. Clyde Davis.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Buesgens, Dwight Waldo, Webb Smartnick, Pat Gonzales, Victor Baca and Philip Million.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lou Donofrio, Tom Dobson, Ed Hazard, Edward McLellan, John Coldwell, Rodger Thomas and all other friends and family members.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales. Services are at 10 a.m. Friday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel of Portales.

Ruth Scott, 87

Mrs. Ruth Scott, 87, of Clovis, died Monday, July 14, 2003, at Laurel High Plains Nursing Center in Clovis.

She was born on Nov. 25, 1915, in Milnesand, to Ada Bell and Albert E. Williamson.

She was the first baby recorded born in the Milnesand community, where she attended the Milnesand School. She married Jim Scott in 1931. They made their home in Milnesand for several years. From the late 1930s until about 1945 they operated a store and post office at Crossroads where she was the Postmaster. In 1946 they moved to a farm and ranch in the Upton community near Floyd. In the late 1960s they operated Scott’s Hideaway Hobby Shop on the farm. She continued to operate the store until the end of 1975 when her health forced her to move to the Retirement Ranch in Clovis, where she lived for 27 years. Family members said she enjoyed singing.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ted Williamson; a sister, Naomi Williamson; a niece, Marilyn Williamson; and by her husband.

She is survived by a brother, A.E. Williamson (and wife, Faye) of Roswell; a sister-in-law, Marjorie “Mrs. Ted” Williamson of Milnesand; a niece, Carolyn Graham (Lyman) of Roswell; two nephews, Teddy Williamson (Elizabeth Ann) of Milnesand and Jim Williamson (Patty) of Plano, Texas; three great-nephews, Jim Williamson Jr., Mark Williamson and Matt Williamson; three great-nieces, Celeste Benefield (Jason) of New Orleans, La., Camille Graham of Las Cruces and Camaryn Graham of Roswell; and a great-great-niece, Jaslin Benefield.

The Rev. Lyman Graham will officiate, assisted by Nelson Rector
