Winnie Luttrell,85

Mrs. Winnie Deatherage Russell Luttrell, 85, of Bethel, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Landsun Health Services Nursing Home in Carlsbad.

She was born on Nov. 6, 1917, in Floyd, to Mattie and Lewis Deatherage.

She graduated from Portales High School in 1937. She married John W. Russell, Jr. on Aug. 25, 1937. She married Kenneth R. Luttrell on Dec. 31, 1950, in Portales.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Bill Russell; two daughters, Janet Duarte and Johnny Danforth; and her husbands, John W. Russell Jr. and Kenneth R. Luttrell.

She is survived by three sons, Phillip Russell (and wife, Rita) and Butch Russell (and wife, Penn), all of Portales, and Bob Russell (and wife, Jean) of Plano, Texas; five daughters, Martha Singleton (and husband, Ron) and Brenda Egan (and husband, Ron) all of Carlsbad, Barbara Chesser (and husband, Del) of Waco, Texas, Marie Taylor (and husband, Cecil) of Lubbock and Betty Grimes (and husband, Bobby) of Portales; two brothers, Paul N. Creek of Carlsbad and Leroy Creek of Durango, Colo.; two sisters, Lillie Deatherage Johnson of Russellville, Ark. and Juanita Deatherage Chumbley formerly of Portales, currently of Huntsville, Texas; 17 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren;

The Rev. Dean Turvaville will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Visitation is scheduled from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at Wheeler Mortuary in Portales.

Pallbearers will be Patrick Duarte and Kerry Egan, Jaron Singleton, Phil Russell and Steven and Gilbert Danforth.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales. Services are at 10 a.m. Friday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.

Aurelia Barela,64

Mrs. Aurelia L. Barela, 64, of Portales, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at her home.

She was born on July 19, 1938, in DeRamadero, to Manuelita and Tomas Velasquez.

She graduated from Portales High School in 1957. She married Frank H. Barela on June 20, 1964, in Portales. She worked at Selected Casings in Portales, as a housekeeper at a local motel and as a dietary aide at the local hospital, retiring in 1996. Family members said she was an excellent cook who enjoyed cooking for all the family and making baby blankets and quilts for her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Tomas Velasquez; two sisters, Maria Nestorita and Cora Chavez; and her husband.

She is survived by two daughters, Carolina and Lydia Barela, both of Portales; a special nephew, Arturo Velasquez of Portales; three brothers, Jose Orlando Velasquez of Portales, Rudy Velasquez of San Angelo, Texas, and Frederico Garcia of Encino; six sisters, Gloria Rivero and Rasalee Velasquez, both of Portales, Anna Tarango and Angie Ramirez, both of Lubbock, and Mary Helen Rodriguez and Macedonia Salinas, both of Clovis.

A rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at St. Helen Catholic Church in Portales.

Father Tobin Hitt will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Roberto Pena, Arturo, Marcos and Jose Velasquez, Jimmy Duarte, Michael Salinas, Ramon Ramirez and Carlos Rivero.

Honorary pallbearers will be her nieces and nephews.

A family dinner will be served at the Memorial Building in Portales following the service.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales. Services arae at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Helen Catholic Church in Portales.

Imogene Fuqua,89

Mrs. Imogene Fuqua, 89, of Bethel, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.

She was born on June 7, 1914, in Gaines County, Texas, to Maudie and Mike Jones.

She grew up near Seminole, Texas. She married “Dunk” Fuqua on Jan. 14, 1931, in Lovington. They lived in Seminole until 1942 when they moved to the Price Ranch west of Floyd. They lived there until 1967 when they moved to Moriarty and in 1971 they returned to Floyd to run the Steele Ranch. In 1977 they purchased the Floyd store. Two years later they sold the store and moved to Bethel where they ranched and traded cattle. She attended the Bethel Baptist Church. Family member said she enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, raising cattle and Dr. Pepper floats.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers, Milton, Elmore, Frank and Bill Jones; a sister, Ello Rea Baughn; a son, Joe Bernard Fuqua; a daughter, Altha Fay Rice; and a grandson.

She is survived by a son, Jim Fuqua (and wife, Donna) of Portales; a sister, Katherine Mitchell of Grants; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Dean Turvaville will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Floyd Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Joe, Tim, Brandon, Jason, Bryan and Dillon Fuqua, Moe Berry and Ronny Tipton.
