Mrs. Opal Hitt, 96, of Portales, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Prairie Acres Nursing Home in Friona.

She was born on March 9, 1907, in the Rogers and Dora communities, to Luna and Ethel Pruett.

She attended school at Long’s and Dora. She married James “Sid” Hitt on Oct. 15, 1927, in Portales. They farmed and ranched in the Dora-Rogers area for many years. She worked several years as a cook for Dora Cafe and for Dora schools.

Family members said she liked to crochet and drink Pepsi. She considered herself “out of groceries” if she didn’t have any Pepsi to drink, they said. They moved to Portales in 1970. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ione Hitt; and by her husband.

She is survived by a son, Leon Hitt (and wife, Twila) of Friona; a daughter Patsy Bode (and husband, Darrell) of Ruidoso; seven grandchildren, James and Steven Russell, Edna Earney, LaQuida Merritt, Monte and Murry Avery and Monica Nuckols; 11 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Herbert Bergstrom and Philip Fike will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dewayne Avery, Jimmy Duncan, Benny Victor, Melvin Littlejohn, Rod and Stanley Payne and Gene Richards and Steven Richards.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Prairie Acres Nursing Home, 201 E. 15th St., Friona 79035.
