Following a gas theft, an 18-year-old Portales man in a maroon Monte Carlo led police officers on a speedy chase on city, county and state roads early Sunday morning.

The officer, who had dealt with the man prior, chased the individual who’s automobile reached speeds in excess of 100 mph on NM 267, where he was weaving erratically in and out of traffic.

After the man sped down a dirt road, the police officer got the license plate number and decided to terminate the pursuit for safety purposes.

Police got a warrant for the man the next day for speeding, reckless driving, resisting and two counts of evading.

He was arrested early Monday morning while walking southbound on the 900 block of S. Dallas.

A joy ride got intense for two teenagers on Saturday afternoon, when they attempted to out-race Roosevelt County law officers who were trying to stop them for running a stop sign.

The 16-year-old driver raced west down Roosevelt Road 4 1/2 — in a relative’s car he had no permission to drive —at speeds in excess of 90 mph because he thought his girlfriend, also 16, had a warrant for her arrest.

The girl told police she ordered her boyfriend to make a run for it.

In the car, police found a road sign that read South Avenue B, which the two said they picked up because they collect signs.

The two were arrested and transported to the Quay County Juvenile Detention Center on several charges including resisting, reckless driving and possession of stolen property.
