G.W. “Rip” Van Winkle

Mr. G.W. “Rip” Van Winkle, 76, died Thursday, May 1, 2003, in Lubbock.

He was born Feb. 9, 1927, in Rogers to Albert and Sybill Horn Van Winkle. He graduated from Rogers High School.

He served with the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. He attended college in Portales for one year and then moved to Carlsbad in 1948.

He married Jeaneane Lewis on May 2, 1953.

He worked for Potash Corporation of America for 24 years. In 1969, he started his own business, Kindel Systems Inc.

His family said his hobbies included golfing, hunting, fishing and square dancing. He was a member of the Elks, VFW, Shuffles and Ruffles and the Men’s Golf Association.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and a brother, Albert Van Winkle.

He is survived by a son, Dirk Van Winkle of Petaluma, Calif.; five brothers, Wayne “Pete” Van Winkle (and wife, Earlene) of Carlsbad, Elvis “Buck” Van Winkle (and wife, Marsha) of Portales, Fred Van Winkle of Ruidoso, Bill Van Winkle (and wife, Judy) of Lubbock, and Jim Van Winkle (and wife, Darlene) of Ruidoso; and seven sisters: Joy McGaha of Clovis, Wanda Hankins of Bogalusa, La., Vera Arnold (and husband, Mill) of Portales, Joann Ussery (and husband, Johnny) of Roswell, Helen Hester (and husband, Pete) of Albuquerque, Voncille “Cookie” McGee (and husband Tom) of Elida, and Janice Turner (and husband Jerry) of Lovington.

Mr. Van Winkle will lie in state today from 3-9 p.m. at Denton-Funchess Funeral Home in Carlsbad.

The Rev. Bob Bacon will officiate the services.

Interment will take place at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park in Carlsbad.
