Lady Cats end season on high note

HOBBS — The Clovis High softball team was in championship form this weekend. Unfortunately, the Lady Wildcats had already been eliminated from postseason competition.

Pitchers Paige Adare and Annie Tweedy tossed shutouts on Friday as the Lady Cats rolled to a 6-0, 11-0 doubleheader sweep of the Hobbs Lady Eagles. On Saturday, Clovis (12-14, 6-6 district) finished off its season with a 10-4 victory.

“The girls came out and played well,” CHS coach Larry Trower said. “If we could’ve played defense or hit the ball like that in some of the other games, we’d be going to the regional tournament.”

Alicia Odom went 4 for 4 with a triple and a two-run single as the Lady Cats scored seven times in the first two innings of Saturday’s game. Adare went the distance in the circle, allowing five hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Clovis collected 13 hits in the game, with Jessica Doss adding 3 for 4 and Laura Wood, Kaycee Cornelison and Marina McGhee each poking a pair of hits.

Not only did Adare and Tweedy hurl CHS’ first shutouts of the season on Friday, neither issued a single walk. The Lady Eagles (8-18, 1-11) managed five hits off Adare and just two off Tweedy — all singles.

“Paige threw real well Friday night, and so did Annie,” Trower said. “I don’t know what it is with Annie, but she always seems to do well against Hobbs.”

The Lady Cats did all their damage earlier in Friday’s opener, scoring twice in the second and adding four in the third — including a three-run triple by McGhee.

McGhee, Wood and Jamie Anaya all went 2 for 4 as the Lady Cats pounded 11 hits in support of Adare, who struck out five.

In the second game, CHS led 4-0 after five and buried Hobbs with seven runs in the final two innings. Tweedy, who recorded six strikeouts, and Wood led a 13-hit attack by each going 3 for 5.

Doss and Odom were both 2 for 5, including a two-run triple by Odom in the seventh.
