  • Abundance of wildlife found at Muleshoe refuge

    Betty Williamson|Updated Dec 28, 2017

On a cold and blustery evening before Christmas, my daughter, four friends, a border collie, and I headed to Paul’s Lake, part of the Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge south of Muleshoe. We were in search of sandhill cranes. Jude Smith, project leader for the High Plains National Wildlife Refuge (which includes Muleshoe), had alerted us that the numbers might be low on this visit — an unseasonably warm winter seems to have temporarily “short stopped” them in Oklahoma and Kan...

  • Year in review: Dora upheaval tops education news

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Dec 27, 2017

The Dora Consolidated Schools Board of Education saw considerable upheaval in 2017 after a state auditor discovered over $100,000 in potentially mismanaged funds between 2013 and 2016. That included $41,000 worth of janitorial supplies purchased from a school employee’s company and $37,000 in recyclables redeemed by an employee. The activity topped a busy year in regional education news. In August, Dora school board member Gary Simpson resigned and the four remaining board members voted to place then-superintendent Steve Barr...

PORTALES — A break in one of Roosevelt County’s main water lines was active for roughly four hours on Wednesday, causing between 500 and 700 residents to lose water service. Roosevelt County Water Co-Op Office Manager Ursula Parker said the cause of the break at the intersection of South Roosevelt Road U and New Mexico 267 — which began around 1 p.m. and was repaired around 4:30 p.m. — was unknown as of Wednesday afternoon. “I just spoke with the general manager, and the line did break in two places,” she said. The area af...

  • Ram teams hope to see variety in Littlefield

    Eric Murray|Updated Dec 27, 2017

PORTALES — The Rams’ boys basketball team will embark on the 26th annual Littlefield Wildcat Classic starting today. The always-anticipated tournament, which runs through Saturday, is one that Portales has never won. But if the Rams can do certain things over the next few days, they’ll have a shot to win it, according to coach Rickie McBroom. “It’s always a tournament that’s really helped us. We haven’t ever won it, but it comes at the right time for us to get three games in,” McBroom said. “Coming back into the new year...

  • Suspect sought in assault at dairy

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 27, 2017

Sheriff Malin Parker called it a “fairly stupid crime.” Officials on Wednesday were still searching for a man who assaulted one dairy worker and pointed a handgun at another in the early hours of Christmas Eve. The motivation was apparently robbery, Parker said, though nothing was taken. “It’s a fairly stupid crime, because most guys that go into a milk barn to work the night shift are not gonna be carrying large amounts of money or anything of any value, because they get so dirty while they’re working,” Parker said. The i...

  • Local Internet providers say their services won't change

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Dec 27, 2017

When the Federal Communications Commission voted on Dec. 14 to repeal Obama-era net neutrality regulations, there were fears among consumers that the decision meant the end of the internet as we know it. Critics of the deregulation decision said internet service providers will now legally be able to slow down content or charge more money to access particular websites. But so far, most local internet providers have maintained that users will not experience any changes as a result of the net neutrality decision. When asked...
