  • Blessings, peace for coming new year

    Rube Render|Updated Dec 27, 2017

It’s Christmas again, and it’s time for my poem, So I’m not at my office, I’m sitting at home, And scratching my head for something to write On this wintery, pre-Christmas night. At Christmas this year on New Mexico’s Plain, We had a dusting of snow but not any rain. I really enjoy a light dusting of snow, But not like Goliath from two years ago. For the last several years there’s never a doubt, That a new Star Wars movie will be coming out. This causes a need to gather the...

  • Government still dividing America

    Kent McManigal|Updated Dec 27, 2017

As 2017 draws to a close, it is disappointing to see America more divided than at any time since the 1860s. The main cause being government. Almost everyone complains about government, at least sometimes. It’s a natural thing to do. The reason is, with political governance, one side only wins at the expense of the other side. This leads to a fracturing of society, where the winners and losers — the Right and the Left — hate each other. It really is that bad. Government is co...

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Dec 27, 2017

TEXICO — Most sports people will tell you the only poll that matters is the scoreboard on the day of the state championship. Well, that's in March. As far as December goes, the polls say Texico is the place to be for basketball. The 16 teams appearing in the Citizens Bank Tournament Thursday through Saturday feature two top-ranked teams, seven more in their classification's top 10 and four more that are also getting poll votes — and that doesn't even factor in Farwell's squ...

CLOVIS — Santa Claus was not the only one bringing gifts to Clovis this holiday season. This year the Salvation Army Clovis Corps once again provided assistance to hundreds of area residents who were struggling to meet their family’s holiday needs. “We were able to help about 700 people for Christmas with toys, food and whatever other assistance we were able to give,” Salvation Army Corps Officer Lt. • Year in review: Tragedy marks Cannon's year

    David Grieder|Updated Dec 26, 2017

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE — In 2017, Cannon Air Force Base welcomed a new Wing Commander, watched his predecessor depart for the Pentagon and celebrated military anniversaries. It also saw tragedy, including a plane crash that killed three airmen and prompted a community-wide solidarity movement. “Cannon Strong” and its accompanying hashtag took hold after a March 14 crash during a training flight near the Clovis Municipal Airport that claimed the lives of Captain Andrew Becker, Captain Kenneth Dalga and First Lieutenant Frede...

  • Confirmations expensive, past their usefulness

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Dec 26, 2017

Just in time for the holiday season, here’s the perfect example of government taking more than it gives: n In March 2017, there were 53 appointees for various state boards and commissions waiting to be confirmed by the New Mexico Senate. n In December 2017, there are 69. Guess we don’t have to ask Senate Rules Committee Chairwoman Sen. Linda Lopez, D-Albuquerque, what she didn’t get around to this year. But maybe in the spirit of the holidays we should consider the inability of Lopez and Senate Majority Leader Peter Wirth...
